Design and Technology – Food Technology (AS and A Level) at Morecambe Community High School

Course description

Food Technology is especially attractive to those students who enjoy a practical element to their learning. You will be given the opportunity to gain personal satisfaction from working with a variety of different materials. This course will encourage you to be an independent learner, develop your creativity through problem solving and allow you to make informed choices as a consumer. You will gain a broad understanding of Food Science and Nutrition and fully understand the relationship between diet and health.

Course content

Unit 1: Materials, Components and Application. 50% of AS, 25% of A’Level
2 hour written examination

Unit 2: Learning through Designing and Making. 50% of AS, 25% of A’Level
Coursework project completed over approx 50 hours

Unit 3: Design and Manufacture.
25% of A’Level
2 hour written examination, including synoptic assessment

Unit 4: Designing and Making Practice.
25% of A’Level
Coursework project completed over approx 60 hours

Food Technology can help you gain access to courses such as a degree in Food, Nutrition and Health or Sports Science. Employment opportunities are varied and include Dietician, Microbiologist, Nutritionist, Environmental Health Officer and many more.
