Course description

1 Spoken Expression and Response
Examination – 30% of AS, 15% of A-Level
2 Understanding and Written Response
Examination – 70% of AS, 35% of A-Level
Unit 1
8-10 minutes long speaking test in two parts – first part is response to a
stimulus card which the candidate has 15 minutes to prepare, and the second
part is general discussion leading on from the stimulus card
You choose a topic from one of the general topic areas in the specification and
when you arrive for the test you are given a text. You have time to prepare the
text. You then answer questions directly on the text and this develops into a
wider conversation on the text and its allied sub-topics. There are no roleplays
or presentations to prepare. You are expected to give relevant and appropriate
information, convey opinions, interact and respond to a range of questions.
Unit 2
This is a 45 minutes listening test (candidate has control over the sound file), a
45 minutes reading test and a 1 hour written test.
You have to manage your own time so that all questions are answered in the
given time. You have control over your listening tracks and can listen to them
as many times as you want. There are 4 listening texts of various lengths, 3
reading texts of various lengths, and the final question is a piece of writing.
This is usually a letter or an article and you are given a stimulus in the target
language to give you some ideas. The general topic areas must be studied in
preparation for this paper.

Unit 3
This is a speaking test. You choose an issue that is related to the Spanish
speaking world that is probably controversial, you prepare a spoken
introduction, saying what the topic is and what your stance on the issue is,
and then the rest of the test will be a conversation and interaction between
you and the teacher who will initially debate your topic with you and offer
an alternative view. The conversation will then cover linked sub topics and
the conversation will then move away from the chosen stance. You will be
expected to be able to use the language of debate, argument and hypothesis to
put forward your view points. You will also be expected to have some facts and
figures relating to your topic.
Unit 4
The exam is in three parts; 1. Translation into the target language
2. Discursive essay 3. Research-based essay on a film, book or topic.
The first is a short translation of about 80 words, from English into Spanish.
The second question is an essay where you are assessed on your skills on
setting out a coherent argument as well as your accuracy. The third question
is a research-based essay. Throughout year 13 you will have carried out some
independent research on a work of literature, a film, or topic area to do with
Spain. These must be drawn from the AS general topic areas and the addition
of three new ones for A2 –
• customs, traditions, beliefs and religions
• national and international events past, present and future
• literature and the art
