English Language and Literature Level 3 at North Hykeham Joint Sixth form

Course description

You will study literature using both literary and linguistic techniques, becoming ‘empowered’ to analyse and compare text through different frameworks.

You will read a variety of fiction and non-fiction including poetry anthology and two prose texts (an example of pairing is ‘The Time Traveller’s Wife’ [Niffenegger] with ‘The Time Machine’ [H G Wells], travel writing and drama texts (including Shakespeare).

Creative writing forms a large part of this course. You will also learn about spoken language and be required to write two texts for ‘performance’, as well as studying plays.

This course is ideal for students with an inquiring mind. As the course combines analysis with creativity. It can be paired with either arts or scientific subjects. You will need a love of literature, as well as the ability to write creatively, and then analyse what you have written using literary/ linguistic terminology.
