Applied Science AS/A2 Level at The Bishops' Blue Coat CofE High School
AS and A-level Applied Science are designed to provide qualifications which provide knowledge and understanding of vocational science. The course’s philosophy is that, in order to understand the nature of science, students must actively experience the science environment. This will be achieved through case studies, links with local employers and research. Science based work experience will be encouraged where appropriate.
Considerable emphasis is placed on the development of practical laboratory skills, independent research, use of ICT and the impact and applications of scientific development in the 21st century.
Assessment is designed to give credit for what students can do as well as what they know and understand. The assessment is in two parts: ‘AS’ during Year 12 and ‘A2’ during Year 13. Each is worth 50% of the total A-level. Assessment is by portfolio (66.7%) and written examination (33.3%) in both years. Portfolio evidence is marked in school and moderated externally. Examinations are set and marked externally.

These broad-based qualifications are designed to allow students flexible progression routes, moving on to higher education or further training and/or employment. The A-level qualification will provide a suitable basis for further study in related subjects in higher education (e.g. biochemical science, food technology, human physiology, materials science, nursing and sports science).
It will also be a valuable preparation for careers in any area of science (e.g. healthcare, leisure and sport industries, medical and laboratory-based work, food and catering industries).
