Course description

Biology is an exciting and dynamic subject that is always in the headlines with new discoveries. A Level Biology offers the opportunity to study a wide range of topics including Through studying Biology you will gain a greater understanding of the complex processes involved in living things.

Course content

AS Level

Biological molecules, Cells, Organisms exchange substances with their environment, Genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms

A2 Level

All of the above and Energy transfers in and between organisms, Organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environments, Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystem, The control of gene expression.

Entry requirements

You will need to have a minimum of 5 A* - C grades at GCSE to study this course. Students must also have either a B grade in GCSE Biology with good grades in both GCSE Math's and English Language due to the demanding nature of the course. A Level Biology links together with many subjects. Previous students have had subject combinations including, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Geography, Sociology, Psychology, Health and Social Care and Sports Studies.


AS - Unit 1 exam 30%, Unit 2 exam 50% and Unit 3 20% of the AS grade

A2 - Unit 4 exam 30%, Unit 5 50% and Unit 6 20% of A2 grade

Future opportunities

A Level Biology combined with A Level Chemistry can lead to further courses/careers in the fields of Medicine, Veterinary Science, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Microbiology and Marine Biology. Past college students have entered Medicine, Biomedical Science, Biochemistry, Dentistry, Physiotherapy, Nursing, Teaching and laboratory work.
