A Level Music at The Whitby High School

Course description

Through the exploration of two areas of study, candidates will develop

and understand how sounds are organised.

There will be one set of musical work for each of the AS and A2 years.

There is a choice of topics including, amongst others, Musical

Theatre, Popular Music and 1960 and Four Decades of Jazz and Blues.

Students in each year course will have a choice of free composition,

compositional techniques or arranging to a brief provided by the

exam board.

The brief for AS students is based on a folk song and for A2 is in a rock,

pop or jazz style. AS candidates will offer two performances chosen

from solo, ensemble or performances that are technology based. For

A2, candidates are required to present 10-15 minute programme using

acoustic instruments and/or music technology.

Entry requirements

Five A*-C grades at GCSE required.
