Geography at Poole Grammar School
The new specification has been written to encourage examination of a wide range of contemporary issues affecting people and the world. It includes investigative field work, both in the local area and further afield - at present, the school visits the Brecon Beacons. The course encourages the development of a wide range of skills useful in lifelong learning.
Geographical skills are developed through fieldwork and the development of extended writing at both AS and A2. These skills include data collection, statistical and graphical analysis of number, and justification and evaluation of issues and problems. Report writing, oral presentations, role playing, value analysis, discussion and research skills are also developed throughout the course. Considerable emphasis is also placed on developing ICT skills - particularly word processing, use of spread sheets data bases, PowerPoint and the Internet.
Places on AS Level courses can, subject to available places, normally be offered to applicants who meet the minimum course requirements. These are usually based on the applicant’s best 8 GCSE results, including English and Mathematics, with a minimum of 344 points, with an A* A or B grade in the subjects chosen - or a related discipline, if appropriate (in Mathematics, the minimum grade of B must be at Higher Tier).
