Ethics and Philosophy AS/A Level at New College Durham

Course description

This subject complements a variety of other AS/A2 Level courses including History, English Literature and Government and Politics. Career opportunities are many and varied from teaching, politics and law.

Course content

At AS Level you will study both Philosophy of Religion and Ethical Philosophy:

  • Ancient influences on Philosophy of Religion
  • Arguments for and against the existence of God
  • Normative Ethical Theories (Including Utilitarianism)
  • Applied Ethics (including abortion, euthanasia and just war)

At A2 Level you will investigate the following topics:

  • Miracles
  • Religious Experience
  • Life after Death
  • Religious Language
  • Meta-ethics
  • Virtue Ethics
  • Sexual Ethics

Entry requirements

To study with us you will need a minimum of 5 GCSE A*-C which must include GCSE Mathematics and GCSE English. A grade B in English Language is also required.

Future opportunities

This A Level, in combination with other subjects, provides you opportunity for further study of Philosophy or related subjects in Higher Education. Philosophy builds extensively critical thinking skills and therefore provides a strong foundation for Higher Education.
