Physical Education A Level PED at Invictus Sixth Form

Course description

This course is suitable if you are thinking of going into sports science, sports coaching, sports rehabilitation or sports teaching.

Course content

Develop theoretical knowledge and understanding of the factors that underpin physical activity and sport to improve performance

Understand how the physiological and psychological state affects performance

Understand the key socio-cultural factors that influence people’s involvement in physical activity and sport

Understand the role of technology in physical activity and sport

Refine their ability to perform effectively in physical activity and sport by developing skills and techniques and selecting and using tactics, strategies and/or compositional ideas

Develop their ability to analyse and evaluate to improve performance

Understand the contribution which physical activity makes to health and fitness

Improve as effective and independent learners and as critical and reflective thinkers with curious and enquiring minds

Entry requirements

Specific Entry Requirements for this course ( in addition to at least 5 Grade 5s inc. English and Maths): A GCSE in PE would be beneficial at Grade 5 or more.


70% of the work is externally examined in two theory test papers.

Paper 1: Scientific principles of Physical Education (2hr 30mins) 140 marks, 40%

Paper 2: Psychological and social principles of Physical Education (2hr) 100marks, 30%

15% of the grade is achieved through practical performance in 1 sport as a performer or coach. 40marks 15% of the grade is achieved through a performance analysis (personal development programme). This is a research based activity where students will research, design, perform and analyse a fitness programme.

Completing this course could lead to gaining a place at university with other A Levels to compliment. It is particularly useful if you want to study sports psychology, anatomy and physiology, nutrition, sports science, physiotherapy or biomechanics.
