English Literature and Peformance IB SL Level 3 Group 1 at Tonbridge Grammar School

Course description

The literature and performance course aims to explore the relationship between literature and theatre. The main focus of the course is the interaction between the literary skills of close reading, critical writing and discussion and the practical, aesthetic and symbolic elements of performance.

Course content

This course is an interdisciplinary interaction between conventional literary criticism and the practical and aesthetic elements of performance. Poetry, prose and drama texts are explored from different angles in a way that goes beyond what is characteristic of either literary or theatre studies as single disciplines. A distinctive outcome of this “marriage” is the performance of a piece transformed from poetry or prose.

Entry requirements

All candidates should have GCSE Grade 6 or above (or its equivalent) in English, Mathematics, at least one Science and one language where studied. Where equivalence cannot be established the School will set appropriate I/GCSE papers to confirm that the applicant is capable of satisfying the academic profile required for the subjects to be studied and the IB Diploma Programme as a whole.

60% of the Literature and Performance assessed work is completed before the final exam in Year 2 of the diploma. This is made up of a 1500 word coursework essay reflecting on their performance of a scene from a play (we studied ‘Our Country’s Good’), and an original devised performance from a text (‘Weight’ by Jeanette Winterson). This is accompanied by a prepared oral commentary on the devising process. The remaining 40% is divided equally between two 1.5 hour examinations, one comparative essay on poetry studied through the course (we study Carol Ann Duffy and Thomas Hardy), and one essay on a proposed performance of an extract from a novel (‘The Great Gatsby’).
