Basic Construction Entry Level 3 Certificate at Shooters Hill Sixth Form College

Course description

This qualification meets the needs of candidates who want to work in various trades of the Construction sector. It allows candidates to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in the Construction sector. You may progress onto Level 2 Multi Trades or a number of Level 1 Diploma courses. Alternatively, you may enter employment directly.

Course content

The course is 19 hours per week for 38 weeks. It is competence based which means that students are assessed on their practical skills and the related knowledge. The programme has an external examination set by City & Guilds and the validating body.

Areas usually covered include; Painting & Decorating, Bricklaying, Plumbing, Plastering and Carpentry.

Students will study general aspects of Health & Safety, the safe use, care and maintenance of tools and equipment and the application of basic access equipment.

In addition to these subjects students will study English either at GCSE or iGCSE. They will also study Maths. Please note that students who come in with a Maths or English GCSE grade at C or above will not be placed on a programme.

Entry requirements

Formally 4 GCSEs at Grade F and above including English and Maths.

Further information

In addition to their main programme students will have the chance to take part in site visits where they get to see a real construction site and talk to the workers. There is also a college enrichment programme that covers a number of activities and takes place during the lunch hour.
