Computer Science A Level at Nelson and Colne College

Course description

This course is ideal for anyone who is seriously considering a career working with computers. You will learn to become an effective designer and implementer of computing solutions, learning to program in a number of languages including C# and Java.

You will study a wide variety of computing principles including fundamentals of programming, data structures, algorithms, data representation, computer systems, computer organisation and architecture, communication and networking, functional programming, databases, BigData and Theory of Computation. In addition to the theory work, you will complete a practical project of your choosing for a real client, such as smart phone apps, Kinect game, projectile motion simulation.

Course content

Unit 1: Fundamentals of programming, data structure, theory of computation and algorithms.

Unit 2: Fundamentals of data representation, computer systems, computer organisation and architecture and communication and networking.

Project: Use the skills and knowledge you have gained through the course to investigate and/or solve a practical problem.

Entry requirements

You will be expected to have two Bs and three Cs in five subject areas at GCSE, to include a minimum of a grade C in English Language as well as Maths at grade B or above.


Unit 1: 2 hour and 30 minute exam on the computer (40%)
Unit 2: 2 hour and 30 minute written exam (40%)
Project: Externally moderated (20%)
