Course Outline

This qualification is an Applied General qualification that provides learners with the opportunity to develop the core specialist knowledge required by the sector through achieving the four mandatory units which cover anatomy and physiology, physiology of fitness, sport and its place in society and coaching in sport.

The qualification offers a wider range of optional units of which learners must achieve at least 9, these include (this list is not exhaustive): nutrition, sport as a business, organising sports events, facilities and operational management, massage, risk assessment, health screening and fitness testing, sports leadership and dealing with injuries.

Entry requirements

5 A*C GCSE’s including English and Science. Level 2 qualification including GCSE PE, OCR Sport Science or BTEC Sport at a level 2 pass/grade C or above


All units in this qualification are internally assessed by assignment and externally verified by a visiting external verifier.

Assessments may be in the form of written assignments, practical performances and witness statements.

Individual units are graded:– Not Yet Achieved, Pass, Merit or Distinction.

Each internally assessed unit has assessment and grading criteria that centres must use to judge the quality of learner evidence in order to arrive at a grading decision for the unit as a whole:

• To achieve a ‘pass’ a learner must have satisfied all the pass assessment criteria. • To achieve a ‘merit’ a learner must have satisfied all the pass and all the merit assessment criteria. • To achieve a ‘distinction’ a learner must have satisfied all the pass, all the merit, and all the distinction assessment criteria.

Future opportunities

This qualification has been developed to support progression to Higher Education to study a sports degree or other related degree programme, including:

• Sports studies • Sport and exercise science • Sports therapy • Health and fitness • Outdoor education • Sports management • Sports development • Sports coaching • Leisure management • Rehabilitation in sport and exercise • Exercise and health studies/science

Whilst the main purpose of this qualification is to support entry to Higher Education it may also be used to support entry to, or progression within sport and leisure employment as it provides a valuable and comprehensive foundation across the breadth of sport.
