Biology - A Level at Bolton St Catherine's Academy
Whilst studying Biology you will develop skills similar to those required of any professional in any other field i.e. time management, research, and presenting. You will also develop specific biological laboratory skills whilst investigating key biological ideas. Having A Level biology opens up a whole world of possibilities, and gives a detailed look into life on earth.
1st year; biological molecules, cells and how organisms exchange substances with their environment. This then leads on to studying genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms.
2nd year; energy transfers in and between organisms, how organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environments. This then leads on to studying genetics, populations, ecology and evolution.
A level Biology requires higher than the standard entry requirements. You will be expected to have at least two GCSEs at Grade 6 and three GCSEs at Grade 5 including English Language at Grade 5 points.
If you studied Core and Additional Science, you will be expected to have Grade 6 points in Mathematics’ (higher grade tier) and a double 6 in Science. If you studied separate science, you will need GCSE Grade 6 points in Mathematics, GCSE Grade 6 in Biology and a Grade 6 from Chemistry or Physics.
Assessment is by written examinations which will assess the knowledge and understanding from the course and the practical skills acquired throughout.
A level Biology can lead to numerous exciting career opportunities such as: physiotherapy teaching, nursing, food technology, ecology, pharmacy, optometry, research, and genetics.
