Course description


Unit 1 – Investigating Science at Work.

Looks at the local industries and companies that use science. Includes an in depth study of one organisation. A visit to that organisation forms the basis of research into health and safety, staffing, organisation and the role of science in their work. (portfolio unit). The organisation studied and visited is Twycross Zoo.

Unit 2 – Energy Transfer Systems

A study of energy transfers in both biological and physical settings. (examined unit)

Unit 3 – Finding Out About Substances.

A very practical unit studying 4 common analytical techniques and where they are used in industry, plus an experimental study of combustion reactions (portfolio unit).


Unit 7 – Planning and Carrying Out Scientific Investigations

(A2 unit)

Students choose their own practical investigation to carry out. Some of the projects chosen have included environmental studies, making a healthy smoothie and a study of sports drinks. (portfolio unit)

Unit 8 – Medical Physics (A2 unit)

Medical imaging and monitoring (examined unit)

Unit 9 – Sports Science

The science behind assessing health and fitness, achieving peak sporting performance, sports injuries and related jobs. (portfolio unit)

Entry requirements

In order to access this course students must have achieved a minimum of 5 A* - C grades at GCSE Level.
