Course description

A level Biology could be the course for you if you: - have an interest in and enjoy biology and wnt to find out about how things work in the biological world by the application of imaginative, logical thinking - want to use biology to progress onto further studies in Higher Education or support other qualifications or enter biology-based employment - are taking A levels in the other sciences and/or mathematics or other relevant courses such as Physical Education, and want to take another course that will support those studies

Entry requirements

D Grade pass in AS Biology. 5 C Grades at GCSE including English and Maths, B Grade in Additional Science (New GCSEs from September 2006), BB (Double Science in GCSEs before September 2006) or BBB (Triple Science in GCSEs before September 2006). A2 GCE is demanding and challenging, and you need to have the aptitude to take the course before you sign on.

Future opportunities

With further training yuou could go into a job related to Biology or Human Biology, such as Doctor, Physiotherapist, Science Technician or Marine Biology. You could go straight into a job as this is a nationally recognised Level 3 qualification. Biologists learn a wide range of key skills, including numeracy, literacy, problem solving, flexible thinking and ICT in the course of their studies. These transferable skills will benefit you in your future learning pathway or career. Many employers across a range of industries are looking for people to employ with these skills. Careers that require Biology include biological testing, biotechnology, independent research and the food industry.You could take this course with other advanced level courses, which overlap with Biology such as Chemistry, Applied Science, Physics, Geography, Geology or more general subjects that may not relate to the sciences, to prepare for higher education. With further training, you could go into a job related to Biology or one of the other sciences such as a Doctor, Nurse, Scientist or Marine Biologist. The course will also help you to develop the basic skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for. Biology goes well with a range of complementary Advanced courses. Universities will require this qualification if you wish to study biological courses in higher education, for example life sciences, medicine, environmental science, forensic science and related courses, or a BTEC Higher National (HNC and HND).
