Chemistry AS/A2 at King Edward VI School, Stratford-upon-Avon
It is expected that students will achieve an A* or A grade in GCSE Chemistry in order to take this subject in the Sixth Form. A B grade is an absolute minimum. Dual Award Science is acceptable only for External candidates where A* or A grades would apply. Again B grades would be an absolute minimum.
The GCE Advanced Course examination is divided into two parts:
Advanced Subsidiary (AS) - 50% of the total award
Advanced Level (A2) - 50% of the total award
The Advanced subsidiary (AS) and the Advanced Level (A2) courses are modular (3 modules each). It is expected that the three AS modules will be completed by the end of the Lower Sixth, followed by the three A2 modules in the Upper Sixth
The aims of the specification should encourage candidates to:
Develop essential knowledge and understanding of the concepts of chemistry, and the skills needed for the use of these in new and changing situations.
Develop an understanding of the link between theory and experiment.·
Be aware of how advances in information technology and instrumentation are used in chemistry.
Bring together knowledge of ways in which different areas of chemistry relate to each other.
