Applied Science BTEC Level 3 at Monkseaton High School
This Level 3 qualification is equivalent in size to one A Level. It is designed for learners who are interested in learning about science alongside other fields of study, with a view to progressing to a wide range of higher education courses, not necessarily in applied science. It has a work related focus and covers the key knowledge and practical skills required in the vocational sector.

Unit 1 Principles and Applications of Science 1 (Externallyassessed unit)
This unit covers some of the key science concepts in biology, chemistry and physics. The topic areas covered in this unit include: animal and plant cells; tissues; atomic structure and bonding; chemical and physical properties of substances related to their uses; waves and their application in communications. This unit is assessed by an examination.
Unit 2 Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques (Internally-assessed unit)
Learners will be introduced to quantitative laboratory techniques, calibration, chromatography, calorimetry and laboratory safety, which are relevant to the chemical and life science industries.
Unit 3 Science Investigation Skills (Externally-assessed unit)
Learners will cover the stages involved and the skills needed in planning a scientific investigation: how to record, interpret, draw scientific conclusions and evaluate. This unit will be assessed through a set tasks – learners take the assessment during a defined window and demonstrate understanding through completion of a vocational task.
Plus, one optional unit that is internally assessed.
Students must achieve 5 A*-C/9-5 grades at GCSE and at least C in Core and Additional Science and 5 in English and Maths. Students could also access the course with a Merit in BTEC Level 2 Applied Science.
4 units of which 3 are mandatory and 2 are external. Mandatory content (83%).
External assessment (58%).
Qualifications are graded using a scale of P to D* Learners must achieve all external units at pass grade or above. Learners are permitted to resit any external assessment only once during their programme.
