Level 3 BTEC National in Sport. Diploma and Extended Diploma: SUCF Football Education Academy at Sheffield United - Football Education Academy
This is a 2 year full time course and offers you the opportunity to develop an understanding of the types of activities undertaken by sport professionals. It provides an introduction to the sector for learners looking to build a career in one of a variety
of areas including careers in teaching, exercise and fitness, coaching and leadership, sports development and the outdoors.
The course is made up of a range sport specific units and you will typically learn about: Principles of Anatomy and Physiology in Sport, Sport Coaching, Assessing Risk in Sport, Fitness Training and Programming, Sports Injuries, Sports Nutrition, Sports Psychology, Sport Development, and many more.
Alongside the academic aspect of the course, you will also choose a pathway and either become a player of football or Futsal within a professional football club. You will compete within the Football League Trust’s Futsal League at EIS and Ponds Forge (Sheffield) as well as visit football clubs such as Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds, Barnsley and Nottingham Forest in the Northern Football League
You will be expected to study maths GCSE if you do not already possess it at grade C and will have the opportunity to study for additional qualifications such as National Governing Body awards which include: Community Sports Leadership Award, Basketball Activators as well as FA Level 1 in Coaching Football.
This course is a progression into higher education or employment in the field of sport. 100% of our learners since 2013 have had offers to stay in Higher Education. Learners who study the Diploma will need to achieve the Higher Level 3 in Sports Leadership to be offered a place on a Foundation Degree.

What work experience opportunities are there? Assistant Sports Coach on holiday camps or primary schools, Physiotherapy workshops at the club, working with people with a disability in sport, NCS graduate programme.
Do you attend any education visits? Yes, we annually visit Loughborough University, the National Football Museum, St Georges Park as well as many more trips our influenced by our Student Voice scheme.
Can you choose more than one pathway? YES! Dependent on your timetable, attitude towards learning and your readiness, you can be part of the Futsal and Football pathway as well as be part of the coach academy scheme.
What is the coach academy scheme? This scheme is set up for volunteers who want to be a sports coach. If you volunteer 30 hours, assisting one of our fully qualified sports coaches then we will help support and fund a coaching qualification of your interest. The more hours you complete, the more qualifications you can gain!
Can I study GCSE mathematics and GCSE English elsewhere? No, as part of your study programme at Sheffield United you will study GCSE maths and English at our facility. We promote employing a personal tutor but this can’t be a replacement.
What is student voice? Every learner at Sheffield United Community Foundation (SUCF) becomes part of ‘Student Voice’. Frequent surveys and feedback forms are sent out for you to complete by choice. The BTEC qualifi cations in this specifi cation are designed to provide highly specialist, work-related qualifi cations in a range of vocational sectors. They give learners the knowledge, understanding and skills that they need to prepare for employment.
The 180-credit BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma extends and deepens the specialist work-related focus from the BTEC Level 3 90-credit Diploma and the BTEC Level 3 Diploma. There is potential for the qualifi cation to prepare learners for appropriate direct employment in the vocational sector and it is suitable for those who have decided that they clearly wish to enter a particular specialist area of work. It is broadly equivalent to three GCE A Levels. Some learners may wish to gain the qualifi cation in order to enter a specialist area of employment or to progress to a higher education foundation degree, HND or other professional development programme. Other learners may want to extend the specialist nature of the subjects they studied on the Level 3 BTEC Diploma or another programme of study.

Method of Assessment
Assessment is by a combination of coursework, integrated assignments and examinations, practical assessments undertaken in industry and at SUFC.
4 GCSE's at Grade A*-C (9-4) including Maths and English or equivelent such as a level 2 Diploma in Sport.
Those without English will be accpeted onto the Level 3 Diploma in Sport.
All units are internally assessed in the BTEC qualifi cations in this specifi cation. All assessment for the BTEC qualifi cations in this specifi cation is criterion referenced, based on the achievement of specifi ed learning outcomes. Each unit within the qualifi cation has specifi ed assessment and grading criteria which are to be used for grading purposes. A summative unit grade can be awarded at pass, merit or distinction.
Learners will be awarded a merit or distinction or distinction* qualifi cation grade (or combination of these grades appropriate to the qualifi cation) by the aggregation of points gained through the successful achievement of individual units. The number of points available is dependent on the unit level and grade achieved, and the credit size of the unit.

A charge of approximately £200 is required for the course. This covers:
- 4 day residential in the Lake District
- Funded additional qualifications (Sports Leaders, First Aid, Coaching awards, referee courses)
- Adidas SUCF training kit (worth £200)
- Reward schemes that see students visit St Georges Park, go paintballing, Go Karting and visit the National Football Museum.
- Bursary of £200 towards Valencia CF Tour
- Trips to universities (SHU, Loughborough) and sport industries (EIS)
The programme offers a variety of exit routes such as Univeristy Scholarships in the USA, Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching at SUFC or in to a high class of British Universities.
If higher education is not your ideal pathway the course will provide you a wide variety of experience and knowledge in various aspects of sport that are sure to help you start your chosen career in the industry.
