Level 2 Diploma in Make-up at Newcastle-under-Lyme College

Course description

The aim of the course is to provide a programme of training leading to a nationally recognised professional qualification for individuals who would like to work within the beauty and make-up industry. During the course, you will cover a range of units including facial skincare, photographic make-up, apply make-up, eyelash and eyebrow treatments, applying skin tanning, body art and nail art.

As part of your study programme here at the College alongside your chosen course you will complete a maths and/or English qualification if you have not already achieved a grade C or above. (This will be a GCSE for all students with a grade D).

The study programme will also incorporate a range of work related experience activities to ensure that you have the breadth of skills required to progress to further/higher education, employment or an apprenticeship.

Entry requirements

A high level of interest in beauty, and the ability to work and communicate with other people is essential. Entry to the course is by interview, enabling us to discuss your individual needs with you and to look at course content and career prospects. The course is open to men and women from the age of 16 upwards. This course is predominantly aimed at students wishing to progress onto the Level 3 Diploma in Make-up Studies.


This is a one year full-time course where you will learn through a mixture of practical and theory lessons. You are continually assessed throughout the course by building a portfolio of work. Practical assessments will be observed by your assessor on a selection of clients. External assessments will be completed with written papers.

Financial information

Newcastle Maintenance Allowance (NMA): Anyone with a household income under £21,000 can receive £20 per week financial support to help pay for travel and meals and meet the costs of essential trips, books, stationery and equipment. The payments will be subject to full attendance on your course. A range of other financial support is available, depending on your personal circumstances.

Future opportunities

Completion of this course can lead to progression onto the Level 3 Diploma un Make-up Artistry.
