Government and Politics at Knutsford Academy

Course description

Two units will be studied at AS Level:

Unit One: People, Politics and Participation· The nature of participation in the political process and voting behaviour· The nature of representation and the role of elections· The role of political parties· The importance of pressure groups and pressure group behaviour

Unit Two: Governing Modern Britain· The British Constitution and the Judiciary· Parliament and Government relationships· The Prime Minister and the cabinet system, policy-making and implementation· Elected local and developed Government in the United Kingdom, and the European Union.

A2 Level
Two units will be studied at A2
Unit Three: The Government of the USA· The constitutional framework of the USA· The Legislative Branch of Government· The Executive Branch of Government· The Judicial Branch of Government

Unit Four: The Politics of the USA· The US electoral process and the concept of direct democracy· US political parties· Voting behaviour· Pressure groups

Entry requirements

A* - C grades with a B grade in the applicant's chosen A level subjects for automatic entry. If an applicant attains C grades in the GCSE subjects they wish to study at A levels, entry is subject to a discussion with the Heads of Subject and Head of Sixth Form
