Dental Nursing Apprenticeship Level 3 at Warwickshire College Group

Course description

The framework includes the level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing and provides a competence based training route to qualify as a dental nurse, supporting patient care and the delivery of dental care.

Learners should be working in a chair side role within a dental practice, hospital or community dental service. You MUST be employed in a dental practice.

Course content

The apprentice framework consists of the following:

  • Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing
  • Functional Skills qualification in English, level 2
  • Functional Skills qualification in Mathematics, level 2
  • Level 3 Award in Employment and Personal Learning Skills in Health

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements other than competence in English and Maths for this framework.  Literacy and numeracy screening will be undertaken prior to commencement of the course.

Learners need to be employed.  Recommended hours of employment are thirty hours a week.


There are two main components to assessment of the Diploma - the knowledge part is assessed through written work and competence assessment is done through workplace observations by an assessor.

Functional Skills are assessed through external exams.

The Award in Employment and Personal Learning Skills in Health is assessed through a variety of methods.

Future opportunities

There are a range of post registration courses available to dental nurses looking to progress in their career.

Dental nurses may move into other dentistry associated roles such as Head Dental Nurse or Dental Nurse Team Leader, Dental Nurse Tutor, Dental Hygienist or Therapist.
