Media Studies Advanced Level 3 at Northallerton School & Sixth Form College

Course description

The creative industries are an important area of growth. The course offers the  opportunity to study a variety of media texts from priunt works such as movie & theatre posters and comics to fil, TV, adverts and socail media. The units covered focus on genre, how narrative is constructed and how characters are represented; you will explore the impact and appeal of products on audiences and how media products are regulated and distributed in industry.

Course content

Each topic is delivered using a similar framework; research and analysis of existing texts, which is then used to generate ideas for practical work. Practical tasks are used to further demonstrate students understanding of conventions and how meaning is created within media products.

Movie posters & trailers

Comic Books and Graphic Novels

Graphic Design for media products

Media regulation, audience & appeals

Audio visual and print advertising

Entry requirements

GCSE Media Studies is preferable but not necessary; typicaly students who have good GCSE results in art, design, drama or English excel at the course. 

Future opportunities

The course is an ideal foundation for students in media products, production processes and technologies. Students typically progress to university with past students applying for courses in TV and Film Production, Journalism, marketing, graphics and illustration.
