Painting and Decorating Level 1 Diploma at Stoke on Trent College

Course description

These courses are the starting point for people who hope to have a career in one of the construction trades, and consist of both practical and theory elements. You will learn the basic skills of the trade as well as what employers expect in the industry, and how to work safely. All students will continue with English and Maths as part of the programme.

Course content

This course is the starting point for people who hope to have a career in painting and decorating. It’s about preparing people to meet the needs of employers and preparing them to work in the industry. The course consists of practical and theoretical elements and both parts of the course need to be successfully completed to achieve this qualification. Employers will expect good attendance, good behaviour and good communication skills enabling you to interact with clients, work safely, using initiative as well as having painting and decorating skills. As a College we will be reinforcing the values expected in industry to give students the skills to be successful in work and life. Throughout the course the students will be assessed on their practical skills and their knowledge of the subject. To achieve this qualification you will have to successfully complete all eight units within the course along with an externally set Knowledge Test and a Practical Synoptic Profile. Students will also complete Functional Skills as part of this course; this aspect of the qualification may not be directly linked to the trade but will improve their wider education. Entry requirements

2 GCSEs grade E-G, or P4V qualification, or another relevant Entry Level qualification. You will have an informal interview/assessment to make sure this is the right course for you.


Students are frequently assessed in both the practical environment and in the classroom to check progress is being made. There are a number of unit end tests, as well as practical models that increase in difficulty throughout the course. The final practical assessment is a timed piece of work assessed against a specific criteria set by the awarding body. The final theoretical test is an online test on the knowledge gained throughout the course.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of the Level 1 Diploma in Painting & Decorating you could be given the opportunity to progress onto the Level 2 Diploma. If you gain employment within the industry you could become an Apprentice, studying for an NVQ in Painting & Decorating. The skills you have gained on the Level 1 Diploma will benefit you if you choose the Apprenticeship route.
