Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair (IMI) - Level 2 Extended Diploma at Middlesbrough College

Course description

The IMI Extended Diploma is designed to provide an enhanced learning programme to meet the future needs of the modern vehicle technician and master technician. The aim of the qualification is to develop the necessary knowledge and understanding required of diagnostic and repair technicians, and to provide students with progression opportunities for career development and further study.

Course content

Mandatory Technical vocational units: • Knowledge of Health, Safety and Good Housekeeping in the Automotive Environment. • Knowledge of Support for Job Roles in the Automotive Environment • Knowledge of Materials, Fabrication, Tools and Measuring Devices used in the Automotive Environment Mandatory Specialist Technical vocational units: • Knowledge of Routine Light Vehicle Maintenance • Knowledge of Light Vehicle Engine Mechanical, Lubrication and Cooling System Units and Components • Knowledge of Light Vehicle Fuel, Ignition, Air and Exhaust System Units and Components • Knowledge of Removing and Replacing Light Vehicle Electrical Units and Components • Knowledge of Removing and Replacing Light Vehicle Chassis Units and Components • Knowledge of Removing and Replacing Light Vehicle Transmission and Driveline Units and Components Applied vocational Units: • Vehicle Electrical and Electronics 2 • Information Communication and Technology for Vehicle Repair 2 • Vehicle Mathematics 2 • Vehicle Science 2 As part of your learning programme you will also attend the following session: Maths (Exempt if you have a minimum of GCSE grade C in Maths) English (Exempt if you have a minimum of GCSE grade C in English Language) Study Skills 1:1 Tutorials Enrichment activities

Entry requirements

At least 4 A* to C grades at GCSE including Maths, English Language & Science. Minimum of L1 initial assessment for Maths and English. "If you do not have a Grade A to C in English and/or Maths, you will be required to continue studying these subjects as part of your Study Programme."


The assessments for this qualification have a practical focus and combine various assessment styles/methodologies in order to suit the subject and levels of units contained within it. Assessment methods include, practical assignments, written assignments and online tests.
