Course description


An introduction to Physical Education

Anatomy and Physiology (Section A)

  • The skeletal and muscular systems (Impact of different types of physical activity in the skeletal and muscular systems).
  • Motion and movement
  • The cardiovascular and respiratory systems in relation to the performance of physical activity

Acquiring Movement Skills (Section B)

  • Classification of motor skills and abilities
  • The development of motor skills and the use of different practice methods.
  • Information processing and the role of memory in developing movement skills.
  • Motor control of skills in physical activity
  • Learning skills in physical activity – motivation and impact on performance.

Socio-Cultural Studies relating to participation in physical activity (Section C)

  • Physical activity – what is sport?
  • Sport and culture – sport in the USA, Australia and UK.
  • Contemporary sporting issues – drugs in sport, violence in sport, sponsorship, media, Olympic games.

All of the above is theoretical and will account for 60% of the final ‘AS’ examination. (A2 hour written paper)

Acquiring, developing and evaluating practical skills in Physical Education


You will take 2 spors from 2 activity profiles:

The activity profiles:Examples -

athletic activities: Track and Field
combat activities: Judo
dance activities: Dance
invasion game activities: Football, Basketball, Rugby, etc
net/wall game activities: Volleyball, Badminton, etc
striking/fielding activities: Cricket, Rounders, etc
target game activities: Golf
gymnastic activities: Gym, Trampolining
outdoor and adventurous activities: Canoeing, Skiing, etc
swimming activities: Competitive Swimming, life saving, etc

You will cover a number of sports over the year and you will then select your best two. You can use sports that you do out of school which will need to be recorded. (check with PE Staff). You will also have one lesson every other week where you will learn how to evaluate performance and you will do an oral exam in this on a chosen sport. These areas are jointly worth 40%. You will have 3½ hours a week of theory and 1 hour of practical.

Historical Studies (Option A1)

  • Popular recreation in pre-industrial Britain
  • Rational recreation in post-industrial Britain
  • 19th century public school and their impact on the development of physical activities and young people.
  • The developmental stages of athleticism in 19th century public schools
  • Case Studies
  • Drill, physical training and Physical Education in state schools

Section B: Scientific Options
Sports Psychology (Option B1)

  • Individual aspects of performance
  • Group dynamics of performance and audience effects
  • Mental preparation for physical activity

Exercise and Sport Physiology (Option B3)

  • Energy
  • Health components of physical fitness
  • Application of the principles of training
  • Performance enhancement
  • All of the above will account for 35% of your final grade. (A 2½ hour written examination)

The Improvement of effective performance and the critical evaluation of practical activities in Physical Education
Practical Skills

  • Performance (1 chosen sport)
  • Evaluation, appreciation and the improvement of performance (oral examination)
  • The above will account for 15% of your final examination.(Your ‘AS’ scores account for 50% of your final grade)
