Introducing Caring for Children and Young People Level 2 Certificate at South Gloucestershire and Stroud College*

Course description

The aim of this qualification is to prepare learners to work with children between birth and the age of five years, with knowledge of children up to seven years.

Course content

Some of the units you may study include:

  • Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people
  • Importance of play for early learning
  • Use food and nutrition information to plan a healthy diet
  • Young children's development
  • Craft activities with young children

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at grade 3 (grade D) or equivalent grade 3, including English or Maths. You should have an interest in working with children. You must provide two good references one from school and one from an early years setting, possibly from a school work experience.


You will receive one-to-one tutorials with your tutor. You will have feedback on your assessment within a maximum of two weeks and you will have informal feedback in lessons.

Future opportunities

If you complete the course, receive a good report from your work experience placement and achieve the Maths and English requirements, you can progress on to CACHE Level 3 Certificate and Diploma in Childcare and Education. If you still need to improve your Maths and English, you could do the Level 2 in Playwork.

This is a level 2 programme to support you in preparing for your next step either studying level 3 to gain your Early Years Educator Status or moving into employment with training.
