Course description

This is an ideal course if you’re active and considering working in sport and leisure or thinking about a career in the uniformed services.
 

Course content

What you will study

Modules studied may include:
• investigate work opportunities
• wellbeing and physical fitness
• develop teamwork skills
• self-discipline and development
• carry out basic map reading and navigation
• participate in competitive sports
• participate in adventurous outdoor activities
• health, safety and first aid
 
You could also take part in an outdoor activities-based residential which focuses on many of the skills you will need for employment in both sport and public services.
Maths and English are key elements of any full-time programme of study in College. If you do not already have a GCSE at grade A*-C in these subjects, you will need to attend sessions allocated on your timetable. These are varied and designed to cater for all ability levels. You will receive advice and guidance regarding the correct level for you.
Skills in Maths and English will support your full-time course, assisting you with assignment writing, research, job applications, presentations, managing your own finances and interpretation of data, to mention just a few. They will also help you in the future. Most employers are looking for ability in these areas and the majority of university courses require you to have Maths and English GCSEs at A*-C. This is why the development of Maths and English is so important, whatever your field of study
 

How students will learn

Classroom and practical based activities.

Entry requirements

Predicted GCSE grades 3 or above 4 subjects 
AND
Minimum Entry Level 3 in English and Maths or equivalent
AND
A genuine interest in the subject/profession
AND
A good reference from Head of Year 10 or Headteacher

Assessment

Assessment takes place throughout the year.

Future opportunities

Further study

You can go on to work in a variety of sport and leisure sectors. There is also the potential for entry to the uniformed services, but age restrictions may apply in some areas. You can also progress to study Level 2 and 3 qualifications within the Sport & Public Services department to further your knowledge and increase your employability prospects.
