Business A-Level at Alsager School
Course description
Two units covering the Year 12 part of the course;
- Theme 1 – Marketing & People. Topics include market research, online retailing, branding & promotion, managing people, entrepreneurs and leadership styles.
- Theme 2 - Managing Business Activities. Topics include raising finance, profit & loss accounts and balance sheets, stock control and methods of production.
Two units covering the Year 13 part of the course;
- Theme 3 - Business decisions & strategy. Topics include mergers &takeovers, SWOT & PESTLE analysis, investment appraisal and decision trees.
- Theme 4b - Global Business. Topics include globalisation, trading blocs, protectionism, global marketing, niche markets, cultural/social factors and ethical issues of trading abroad.
Entry requirements
This course requires a sound level of numeracy and a good standard of written English. It would be desirable to have at least B grades in Maths and English at GCSE. You do not need to have studied Business Studies at Key Stage 4 to do this course.

Future opportunities
Past students have also gone on to study Business related apprenticeships for Network Rail, Bentley & local firms. Alternatively students may go on to study a variety of Business and/or Economics related degrees at university. Business also combines well with Accounting, Politics, Geography, Law and Foreign languages at degree level. A wide range of career options naturally follow from studying Business. For instance – Retail Management, Human Resource Management, Marketing and Commercial Banking.
