Sport Studies AS/A-Level at Shire Oak Academy

Course description

In Yr 12: During the AS component of the course, students will complete four units. 

In Yr 13: The A2 Sport Studies course follows the same four units as the AS course, however both external examinations are longer, assessing the topics in more depth.

Year 12: 

  • Scientific Principles of Physical Education
  • Psychological and Social Principles of Physical Education
  • Practical Performance
  • Performance Analysis

Year 13: 

  • Scientific Principles of Physical Education
  • Psychological and Social Principles of Physical Education

Entry requirements

Due to the demanding scientific aspects of the A-level syllabus we require a GCSE pass of B/C or above in Physical Education or a BTEC merit or above. Students must be playing and competing in a sporting activity at club level or equivalent.

Assessment

Year 12:

  • Scientific Principles of Physical Education - 1hr 45min exam - 40%
  • Psychological and Social Principles of Physical Education - 1hr 15 min exam - 30%
  • Practical Performance - 15%
  • Performance Analysis - 15% both internally assessed

Year 13:

  • Scientific Principles of Physical Education - 2hr 30min - 40%
  • Psychological and Social Principles of Physical Education - 2 hrs - 30%

Future opportunities

Employment for sports studies graduates is not limited to the sport and leisure industry; other job areas include sales and marketing, retail management, public relations, journalism, administration, police, youth and community work.
