Business Studies at The Joseph Rowntree School

Course description

AS Units:

Unit 1: An Introduction to Business - In this unit you will study different types of business organisation and their objectives. You will analyse the effect of the external business environment on the performance of firms.

Unit 2: Business Functions - In this module you will look at the key aspects of business in detail. You will analyse the marketing function of the firm; how it decides on its product range, prices, promotional activities and location and distribution. You will study the firm’s financial and accounting systems and its production regime. You will also look at the ways staff are recruited, trained and motivated.

A2 Units:

Unit 3: Marketing - In this module you will develop your understanding of marketing and learn how to design a full marketing strategy. You will consider the importance of research and employ business planning tools to case studies.

Unit 4: Strategic Management - In this module you will look at all the key aspects of business and apply your understanding to business scenarios. You will develop your skills and be able to design business strategies.

Entry requirements

To be successful at A-Level, students need to achieve an average points score of 38, which is broadly equivalent to 5 GCSE grades A*-C

GCSE Business Studies (if taken) grade C. However previous experience of Business Studies is not essential.
