Government and Politics AS level at Malmesbury School

Course description

The aims of AS and A2 are:

  • To develop students’ interest in, appreciation and knowledge of government and politics
  • To teach students how the British Political system works and how the US political system works.
  • To provide students’ critical awareness of the nature of politics and the relationship between political ideas, institutions and processes.
  • To enable students to study a wide range of contemporary issues and news stories.
  • To develop students’ research, analytical and communication skills.

Course content

F851: Contemporary Politics of the UK

This unit focusses on the developing an understanding of political parties and pressure groups. Students will develop an understanding of contemporary parties and their key ideologies and ideas. They will look at the place of pressure groups within our political system. Students will also explore electoral systems, UK parliamentary elections and voting behaviour in the UK.

F852: Contemporary Government of the UK

This unit focuses on the key political institutions in the UK, including the executive, legislature and judiciary. Students will also explore the UK constitution and the relationship of the UK with the European Union.
