Maths (Further) (AS/A Level) at New College Swindon

Course description

This immensely successful course is for those who already have an AS Level or A Level in Maths and wish to gain a second Maths AS or A Level in their second year.

By the end of the course you will have developed sound algebraic technique together with the ability to analyse and solve real-life problems.

Course content

Since this is a course for those who already have an AS or A Level in Maths, you will normally have followed Express Maths (NC134) in your first year.  Further Maths is the second year of the Double Maths option.

You will study six further modules from: Pure Maths, Statistics, Mechanics and Discrete Maths.  There may be the possibility of opting for units of your choice, and studying extra units.

These modules introduce you to a range of advanced mathematical ideas and new applications of Maths, as well as building on skills which you will have developed during the first year.

Entry requirements

You should already have a pass in AS Level or A Level Maths, normally at grade C or above.  You can study AS Level Further Maths alongside A Level Maths in Year 2.

It is vital that you enjoy doing Maths, as well as being good at it.  You will spend a lot of time on the subject!


The Further Maths modules are assessed in a similar way to Maths and allow the use of a graphical calculator.

Exams are 1½ hours.

Future opportunities

Double Maths provides an excellent foundation for the study of Maths at University.

It is also highly recommended if you are considering studying Physics or Engineering.

Past students have gone on to study a wide range of subjects at Oxford, Cambridge and other top universities.

Men and women with mathematical skills are in short supply.  The range of career opportunities is very wide.

The statistics unit is good preparation for a career in Business, Medicine, Economics, Insurance, Finance, Accountancy, Market Research or Social Science.

The mechanics unit is good preparation for a career in Engineering, Technology, Pure or Applied Science.

The Decision unit is good preparation for a career in Computing or Operations Research.
