Course description

Mathematical knowledge provides an important key to understanding the world in which we live. Mathematics can enter our lives in a number of ways: we buy things, read a newspaper, or time a process. Mathematics, for many of us, also extends into our chosen profession: civil servants need to analyse data, economists need to recognize financial trends; and engineers need to take account of stress patterns in physical materials. Whether you view maths as a language, central to our understanding of the world, or as a series of satisfying puzzles to solve or even as a thing of beauty there is no denying its prevalence in the world. 


Course content

Maths plays a vital part in understanding the world in which we live. Maths is not just theory used by mathematicians and scientists but it effects every aspect of our lives and careers.

  • Developing the algebra, trigonometry and graphs studied at GCSE
  • Calculus and other topics that will prepare you for a degree in Maths or Science 
  • Either Statistics or Mechanics

AS Maths 

  • Core 1: quadratics, straight lines and calculus
  • Core 2: trigonometry, logarithms and series
  • Applied unit: statistics, probability and correlation

A Level

  • Core 3: functions, exponentials, and trigonometric identities
  • Core 4: advanced calculus and vectors Applied unit in either discrete mathematics, statistics or mechanics

You will develop your problem solving skills and work both independently and in small group activities.

Entry requirements

You will need an A* or A in GCSE Maths. B grades will only be considered in exceptional cases.


Assessment is 100% examination based. Students will have to pass unit tests in the first term of the academic year to proceed with the course.

Future opportunities

Maths and related subjects at degree level are highly sought after by all employers. The career prospects are endless, from banking to airline pilots and from marketing to medical statistics. The future prospects for good mathematicians are limitless!
