Design and technology A Level at Monks' Dyke Tennyson College

Course description

Design and technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, students design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Students learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative and enterprising.

Course content

Product Design is intended to offer opportunities for you to study present and realise solutions to design problems. Through designing and making, you will be carrying out coursework closely linked to the real world of product manufacture. The syllabus very much encourages creativity and innovative ideas and allows for a choice of focus areas selected from Graphic Products, Resistant Materials, Textiles, Food Manufacturing; Systems & Control and Electronics. As part of the course you will carry out a case study and undertake a major project where you will be required to design, make and evaluate your own product.

Future opportunities

To careers and employment within design field, engineering and manufacturing industry. There are more broadly, opportunities in the teaching profession. This subject also supports other subjects such as Graphics, Maths, Physics and ICT courses.
