General Studies at King Edward VI Grammar School, Chelmsford

Unit 1: CULTURAL AND SOCIAL DOMAINS – Candidates gain an appreciation of political systems, processes and goals, social and economic trends and constraints. They learn to explain and evaluate human behaviour and explore beliefs, values, and moral reasoning. They also study media and communication and creativity and innovation.
Unit 2: SCIENTIFIC DOMAIN - Candidates gain an appreciation of the characteristics of the sciences (physical, life and earth), an understanding of scientific methods, principles, criteria and their application. They also study mathematical reasoning and its application.
An interest in the world in which we live, an enquiring mind and a willingness to challenge accepted ideas and methods. In addition, students will be required to support their studies with wider reading and take every opportunity to imbed knowledge gained in other subjects.
The General Studies AS is assessed by one 1 hour exam and one 2 hour exam.
General Studies will develop the ability to think critically about important issues that affect the way we live and to communicate precisely and accurately. It will bring some coherence to the broad general knowledge gained from the mass media by placing it in a clear context. As a result individuals will be better able to interpret the mass of information available in this data rich time. A good grade in General Studies is always viewed positively by Universities.
