Course description


If you want to work in the performance industry as an actor, singer or dancer -- on stage, film or television -- then this programme is for you.

Through our unique partnerships with Live Theatre and Sage Gateshead, you will benefit from first class workshops and tuition from industry practitioners in professional venues.

Gateshead Academy of Performing Arts is a stepping stone into the professional industry, higher education or an exciting way to increase your employability for a wide number of industry sectors including sales, teaching and community work.

The programme is designed to make sure you're properly prepared for work or for higher study.


Course content

You will develop skills in many areas, including:

  • acting for TV, film and radio
  • musical theatre
  • vocal and physical technique
  • movement
  • auditions and much more.

You'll get the chance to perform in a variety of working venues, including Northern Stage and Sage Gateshead.  Y

ou'll work with the programme team to set aspirational targets, plan your studies effectively and continue to develop your English and maths skills.

This will include studying for GCSEs or Functional Skills in English and maths if you don't already have them.

Entry requirements

  • This course is Level 3 - you will need to have the equivalent of at least four GCSEs at grade C or above - preferably including English and maths.
  • For vocational programmes, it would help to have a relevant qualification at Level 2 or appropriate experience.


Continuous assessment using class based assignments and portfolio of evidence.

Future opportunities

Fast-track to an apprenticeship

If you can’t find the right apprenticeship vacancy or you want to do some studying first - no problem. You can start on a vocational study programme then once you’re ready and a vacancy becomes available, we’ll help you transfer on to an apprenticeship.

    • Gateshead College's Baltic Campus is located on the Gateshead quayside, just minutes from Newcastle City Centre and its attractions.

      The College is situated behind the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and The Sage Gateshead.

      The College has its own car park, but at busy times alternative parking is available nearby.

      There is a charge for parking. Students can apply for a permit to allow free parking during study time.
