Course description

This is a 1 year full time course.

About the course

Foundation Learning at Peaks College delivers an exciting and varied programme.  It provides an employability qualification where you can choose up to 3 different vocational subjects to suit your interests.  You can pick from Uniformed Public Services, Business, Health and Social Care and Media.  You will also need to study Functional Skills Maths and English.

You will study a personal social development programme which is designed to help prepare you for work and your future through learning about money, the environment and developing your personal abilities. Learning takes place through practical and theoretical classes.

Your personal tutor will support and help you develop your skills and achieve your qualifications.  You need to be determined to achieve and willing to work hard.

The Sheffield College is proud to celebrate your achievements through celebration evenings and events throughout the course.

Qualification title

You will gain the full foundation learning framework which is made up of several qualifications in employability, personal, social development and functional skills.

Entry requirements

Completion of school exams. 



There are Functional Skills exams but Foundation Learning coursework is ongoing and mainly completed at college. You will need to be able to work to targets and deadlines.

Financial information


At The Sheffield College we will always do our best to support you through your studies, to make them as stress free as possible. We have a specialist support team who can give you all the advice you need on all things financial, including what might be available to you, so that you don’t go short and you can concentrate all your efforts into your studies.

Free meals

If you meet the eligibility criteria we’ll be able to support you with free meals. You’ll get an amount of money that you can use within the college shops and diners per day. This will be added to your student ID card which you will just swipe to purchase items.

Travel passes

Students (including Apprentices) of The Sheffield College who live in South Yorkshire are eligible for a 16–18 Student Pass which entitles pass holders to cheaper travel on buses and trams in South Yorkshire. Pass holders are also entitled to half fare on Northern train services in South Yorkshire.

Learner Support Fund

If you are enrolled with us, you may receive support towards the cost of:

  • Travel

  • Books and materials

  • Uniform and equipment

  • Essential course trips

  • NUS extra

  • DBS checks needed for your course (previously known as CRB)
  • UCAS registration fee and travel to interviews when applying for university

Where can it lead?

We encourage all students to progress to either a full Level 1 or even straight to a full Level 2 course, apprenticeship or employment.
