English Literature A Level at The Campion School

Course description

Year 13: A2 Units Unit 3 (LITB3): Texts and Genres – Elements of the Gothic A development of ideas on the significance of genre that were introduced during the AS course. Individual texts will be explored in relation to commonly accepted principles of the ‘Gothic’ genre. Christopher Marlowe Dr Faustus Emily Brontë Wuthering Heights Angela Carter The Bloody Chamber This unit will be assessed by a closed book examination of two hours’ duration. Unit 4 (LITB4): Further and Independent Reading An introduction to the study of a wide range of texts, to different ways of reading texts for study, and to some of the ideas that literary critics use when they interpret literature. This unit will be assessed by a coursework portfolio of two essays, one consisting of 1500-2000 words and the other 1200-1500 words. The longer assignment consists of a comparative study.

Entry requirements

Students would generally be expected to have gained at least B Grades in GCSE English and GCSE English Literature.

Future opportunities

Careers in Law, Journalism, the Media and Education are possibilities but the study of English provides a valuable general background for many areas. One of the advantages of choosing English is that the subject is so highly regarded by admissions tutors and employers. It is a popular subject at University - not least because it is intrinsically enjoyable and (for those who have the skill and enthusiasm) not too difficult!
