Geography GCE Advanced Level at The Milton Keynes Academy
The aims and objectives of the AQA GCE Advanced GCE Geography are to enable students to:
- Be excited about the world around them.
- Challenge their perceptions.
- Stimulate their investigative and analytical skills.
- Be provided with the knowledge, skills and enthusiasm that are sought by higher education and by employers.
- Develop a range of cross-curricular skills.
Students are introduced to Geography through investigating a variety of processes in the physical and human worlds. This will build on some aspects that have been studied at GCSE, while presenting some new topics as well. On top of this, students will complete a real-world investigation and develop a range of geographical, scientific, numerical, literacy and ICT skills.
Theme 1: Water and Carbon Cycles
- Inputs, outputs, stores and transfers in these two cycles.
- The impact of changes to these cycles.
- The relationship between these two cycles, and between them and climate change.
- How to reduce the impact of these on climate change.
Theme 2: Coastal Systems & Landscapes
- Inputs, outputs, stores and transfers in coastal systems.
- Development of coastal landforms.
- Impact of climate change on coastal landscapes.
- Methods of managing coastal environments.
Theme 3: Hazards
- Causes, impacts and management of volcanic hazards.
- Causes, impacts and management of seismic hazards.
- Causes, impacts and management of storm hazards.
Theme 4: Global Systems & Governance
- Patterns of international trade and access to markets.
- Impacts of international trade systems.
- Responses to globalisation.
- The threats to, and protection of, Antarctica arising from globalisation.
Theme 5: Changing Places
- The concept of place and the importance of place in human life and experience.
- Factors that contribute to the character of places.
- How places fit into different contexts.
- Studying the changes in specific places, using a range of skills.
Theme 6: Population & the Environment
- Processes of natural and migratory population change.
- How population is structured and how these structures can be impacted.
- Links between population growth and the environment.
- Global patterns of health, mortality and morbidity, and the reasons for these.
- Predictions for future population patterns.
Five or more A*-C grades (GCSE or BTEC-equivalent), including grade 4 in English or Maths. Students should also have attained a minimum grade B in Geography GCSE.
Component 1: Physical Geography (Themes, 1-3) 2hr 30min exam worth 40% of the A Level
Component 2: Human Geography (Themes 4-6) 2hr 30min exam worth 40% of the A Level
Component 3: Geographical Investigation research project worth 20% of the A Level
A qualification in Geography provides students with a vast array of transferrable skills. These skills can lead to a variety of different careers; some of which make direct use of geographical knowledge, and some which apply the skills developed to different areas. Geography is seen by universities and employers as a broad subject that can have applications to many other areas.
The most common career paths that make direct use of Geography are those involved in:
- The police and armed forces
- City council officials
- Hazard assessing.
