ICT Cambridge Technical Level 3 at South Hunsley School and Sixth Form College

Course description

The OCR Cambridge Technical Level 3 Introductory Diploma in ICT is a vocationally related qualification that takes an engaging, practical approach to learning and assessment. It is industry relevant, geared to key sector requirements, and suits a broad range of learning styles and abilities. It gives students an in-depth understanding of ICT in the modern workplace, giving insights into the role of ICT in specialist careers. It provides on going learning and assessment of the practical skills and knowledge required to succeed in ICT related careers.

This is a two-year course which is designed to develop your practical ICT skills, problem-solving and communication skills and gives you the knowledge and awareness of the benefits and drawbacks of ICT and the impact it has on individual lives and on society in general.

Course content

Students who start their Cambridge Technical ICT course in September 2016 will follow a new syllabus.  The exact course requirements have yet to be released but there will be an expectation that students sit examinations as part of the course. However, it is anticipated that course content will cover some of the following:

Communication and Employability Skills for IT

This unit allows you to understand what an employer expects of an individual and how to communicate effectively using IT by looking at and using a range of office based applications.

Information Systems

This unit will ensure that you have a greater understanding of how organisations use information internally and externally. The skills gained by completing this unit will give you knowledge of the functionality of information and the ability to produce management systems.

Developing Computer Games

This unit provides you with an understanding of different computer games and their social impact. It will enable you to design, develop and test computer games. This unit will give a good insight into working within the computer gaming industry.

Website Production

This unit will prepare you to design, create and test a fully functioning website, while also providing essential grounding knowledge on the architecture and security issues that need to be considered.

Computer Animation

This unit allows you to understand different types of animation and their uses. You will gain the knowledge and skills to use software to design and create different types of animation. This unit will allow you to understand how animations are designed and created in the industry for different mediums.

Interactive Media Authoring

This unit focuses primarily on the creation of interactive media products for a range of platforms, such as apps for mobiles and tablets. 

Entry requirements

You should have a minimum of four GCSEs at grades A*- C or equivalent.  You will also be expected to have achieved a Pass at ECDL.


This is a vocational course with units that are tailored to meet your interest. It provides a more practical way of studying and is different to a traditional A Level. The course does rely on you being organised and motivated and has the same status as any other A Level, including the awarding of UCAS points.

Future opportunities

Since this course carries UCAS points it is an excellent course for students wishing to prepare themselves for Further and Higher Education. The practical knowledge, skills and understanding you learn in this course are especially relevant for employment where employers can immediately benefit from this industry relevant, vocationally geared and stimulating course.
