AS Level: Chemistry at King Edward VII Science and Sport College, Coalville

Course description

 Organic Chemistry is the study of carbon compounds and biological molecules. 

 Inorganic Chemistry covers the Chemistry of all other elements on the periodic table, except carbon. 

 Physical Chemistry is the more mathematical element of the course, and covers rates of reaction, reversible reactions, moles and energy in reactions. 


Entry requirements

 Five GCSE grades A*-C including grade C in either GCSE Chemistry or GCSE  Additional science. You also need Grade C in Mathematics.



You will sit 2 external exams in Year 12, one in January and another in June.  If you go on to study A2, then you will take a further 2 external exams, again in January and June.  There is also a coursework element for both AS and A2.  You will complete coursework which tests your analytical, qualitative and evaluative skills.  At AS, 30% of the marks come from the first exam, 50% from the second exam and 20% from the coursework.


Future opportunities

You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses such as Biology or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in Chemistry, which could lead onto higher education in science related subjects or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to Chemistry or one of the other sciences such as a Doctor, Nurse, Scientist or Pharmacist. You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you to develop the basic skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.

Most students who are successful at A Level chemistry, go on to higher education.  Chemistry is essential not only for chemistry based degrees, such as chemistry and biochemistry, but also essential for medicine, veterinary science, dentistry and forensic science.  Our pupils have also gone on to other things, such as joining the armed forces and engineering.
