Course description

The aim of the photography course at Holgate is to:-
  • Teach skills, techniques and methods
  • We provide the opportunity to work with SLR cameras as well as studio set ups.
  • You will learn analytical and documenting skills using a specialist vocabulary

Course content

Visits to galleries and museums are arranged, as well as in class discussions. There will be an opportunity for students to use the dark room facility at Nottingham Trent University as well as work with photography lecturers and degree students.

Entry requirements

The best foundation for success in photography is a grade A*-C at GCSE. However, if you have an aptitude for the subject, you may have the basic skills to succeed and we would be happy to see a portfolio of your work.

You should have an understanding of the basic elements of photography: - Shutter speed, Aperture priority, etc: and also some understanding of the importance of composition.

Future opportunities

For students who are planning to take up careers for which an art/photography background is relevant.  These might include advertising, publishing, fashion, architecture, museums, theatre or art gallery work.

Forensic photography and photo journalism are just two examples of other specialist areas that can be pursued. (Art at A2 is not essential for these however).
