Introduction to Health, Social Care & Children & Young People's Settings Level 1 at Gateshead College
The course provides a sound foundation and understanding of the topics relevant to aspects of health, child care and social care including communication, health and safety, rights and the needs of others and is delivered by ambitious and passionate teachers who regularly return to practice to ensure they maintain their knowledge and skills of the sector.
You will develop skills and knowledge employers look for by completing 60+ hours of vocational work experience. This vocational experience will be in the format of ‘block weeks’ and is a great opportunity on a level 1 programme.
We have the commitment to help you develop the skills that make you ready to meet the challenges of the world of work and to show any potential employers you have the right attitude and high standards that would be an asset to any organisation.
As part of your course, you will access the excellent practical resources in our fully equipped nursery that will enable you to get real 'hands-on' experience of what it would be like to work in a nursery before undertaking your work placement.
You will learn by a range of activities including practical activities, demonstrations and guest speakers, by having an individual learning plan, setting your own targets during tutorial sessions and by teachers ensuring there are opportunities for you to stretch and challenge your learning and development.
You will follow a study programme to help you develop a range of skills that will support your progress to employment or to further study.
This will include English and maths as these skills are required all of the time at work and will be embedded into your study programme to enable you understand how these skills are used in the industry your are interested in working in.
We will put a programme together that best meets your needs and might mean working towards GCSE English and maths, a pre-GCSE qualification or functional skills.
You will learn about communication and multi-disciplinary teamwork as part of job pursuit workshops, and will complete projects that enhance the curriculum such as fundraising activities and voluntary work. You will be required to achieve all these aspects of your course as well as the main programme.
1 GCSE grade D or above, ideally in English, a mix of E-F grades in other subjects and the ability to demonstrate a real interest in working in the care sector.
You will complete a range of assessments including poster and presentation work, assignments, case studies and projects.
