A Level : Mathematics at Melton Vale Sixth Form College
Mathematics is a challenging and fascinating intellectual discipline and a subject with a long and illustrious history. By studying mathematics, you will be introduced to some very important ideas, analysis and mathematical applications. The course covers Core Mathematics, Statistics and Mechanics. Statistics is used in other A-level subjects such as Biology, Geography and Psychology. Mechanics will complement Physics extremely well.
Mathematics is a highly rewarding subject. You will be challenged by the course, but if you enjoy the challenge of problem solving and feel a satisfaction from knowing that you’ve reached the solution to a problem, then math's might be the course for you. Over time you will begin to appreciate the elegance and beauty of the subject.
The first year of the course will cover the introductory material in Core Mathematics, Statistics and Mechanics. Core Mathematics examines topics such as algebra, trigonometry and geometry, which you will have some familiarity with from GCSE. You will extend your skills in these areas and be introduced to others, such as calculus which is one of the most important areas of mathematics. In Statistics, you will learn how to apply a variety of techniques to summarise, analyse and interpret numerical data. You will also look more closely at probability and its applications. In Mechanics you will consider Kinematics, which describes the motion of a particle; Statics and Dynamics, which examines the forces acting upon a particle at rest and in motion respectively.
During the second year, this model is repeated, but the mathematics becomes more complex and the problems more sophisticated.
MV16 Minimum Requirements:
To study A-Levels at MV16 you must have achieved a minimum of grade 4+ in GCSE English and Maths, plus 3 grade 6's or B's in other subject areas including any subject-specific entry requirements where stated on the individual subject pages.
Mathematics - subject specific entry requirements:
In addition to the MV16 Centre entry requirements you will need to achieve a minimum grade 6+ in GCSE Maths to study GCE A-level Mathematics at MV16.
There are three examinations to be taken at the end of the two year course. Two of these are Core Maths exams and the third is a paper which examines the applied aspects of the course – Statistics and Mechanics. All three papers are equally weighted.
Mathematics is a highly regarded discipline and universities and employers place a high value on A-level Maths. It is important that you carefully consider which course is best for you.
If you are thinking of studying Biology or Chemistry, Geography, Psychology or Sociology, then Maths is highly appropriate, since all of these subjects require the analysis of patterns using statistical techniques. Maths is also highly suitable for science students and complements physics particularly well. If you are thinking of a career in medicine, architecture, accountancy, business, actuarial work, engineering or scientific research, then a background in mathematics will be extremely beneficial to you.
