English Literature A Level at Derby College

Course description

English is an exciting and important qualification which will enable you to develop your skills and abilities, providing you with progression routes to higher education, employment or further training.

This course will enable you to analyse, interpret, compare and understand a wide range of English texts from a number of historical periods.  You will study a range of texts from each genre including drama, prose and poetry. You will also be required to study a Shakespeare text in depth in preparation for the examination.

Entry requirements

You need to have at least a C grade in Maths at GCSE and GCSE English Language will need to be at least a B grade. In addition you will need to have three further GCSEs at grade C or above.

Assessment

You will be assessed via written examination and coursework, with a split of 60:40%.  There is one examination and one piece of coursework per year.

This course will help with entry to higher education or employment.  Career prospects include roles in primary, secondary and further education teaching, education advice and guidance, advertising, media, recruitment consultancy, publishing, human resources, journalism, secretarial work and special needs support assistance.
