Childcare and Education Level 2 at Wickersley School and Sports College

Course description

This Course is Full-time and will include Option Blocks A, B and C

The aim of this qualification is to prepare learners to work with children between birth and five years, with knowledge of children up to seven years. This course is a one year programme, two days per week will be spent in college, for the remaining 3 days you will be allocated a work placement in a Foundation Setting in a local school setting. Entry requirements are a GCSE grade D in either Maths or English. You will also be required to undertake a DBS check as you will be working with children. Whilst studying for this programme you will gain the opportunity to resit Maths and English as current guidelines set by the government require early years workers to have GCSE Maths and English at a C grade or above.

Course content

During the year you will study several units including the following:
  • Supporting physical routines for children
  • Supporting children’s play
  • Use observation, assessment and planning
  • Support the needs of the child in preparing for school
  • Use legislation relating to health and safety of children
  • Supporting additional needs

Entry requirements

The minimum qualification for entry into the Sixth Form is 5 4 grades including Maths and English, although there are specific entry requirements for some of our option subjects.

A student’s suitability for their chosen subjects will also be taken into account, even if they meet the 5 4 grades threshold.

Applicants will need to have a proven record of good or excellent effort and attendance in Year 11 in order to qualify for a place, verified by a suitable reference.


Learners must achieve a total of 33 credits: 29 credits from mandatory group A; plus 4 credits from optional group B. All assignments are marked and graded by your tutors. There will be an element of practically assessed tasks which you will be observed on in a real work setting which we will arrange. There are no examinations for this subject.

Future opportunities

On completion learners could progress on to the Level 3 technical Diploma in Childcare and Education or gain employment as Nursery assistant or Classroom assistant.
