English GCSE at Stanground Academy

Course description

This course is mandatory for any student who did not achieve a grade 5 or above in English language at GCSE and is on a programme of study at Stanground Academy.

Students will be taught through a variety of methods, including: small group and whole group discussion, teacher-led lessons and completing independent research to present to the group.

Course content

Through this course students will study how to

·         use the English language effectively to write descriptively and persuasively

·          to read a range of fiction and non-fiction texts and consider different techniques used by writers to engage the interest of readers.

They will also:

·         develop the ability to communicate clearly, accurately and effectively when speaking and writing.

·         learn how to use a wide range of vocabulary, and the correct grammar, spelling and punctuation

learn how to analyse language and structural devices in detail

Assessment

Students will be assessed through external exams:

Paper 1: Explorations in creative reading and writing

Paper 2: Writers viewpoints and perspectives
