Sociology A level at Acton High School
This course gives students the opportunity to develop knowledge & understanding of the main sociological theories and methods. It is designed to encourage students to demonstrate the application of a range of skills and consider the integration of sociological themes.
Paper 1: Education with Methods in Context, 50% of AS (1 hour 30 minutes)
Written exam. Education: short answer and extended writing questions (40 marks), Methods in Context: extended writing (20 marks).
Paper 2: Research Methods and Topics in Sociology, 50% of AS (1 hour 30 minutes)
Written exam. Section A: short answer and extended writing (20 marks), section B: short answer and extended writing (40 marks)
Paper 1: Education with Theory and Methods, 33.3% of A Level (2 hours)
Students answer short answer and extended writing questions on Education (50 marks), extended writing questions on Methods in Context (20 marks) and extended writing questions on Theory and Methods (10 marks).
Paper 2: Topics in Sociology, 33.3% of A Level (2 hours)
Students answer extended writing question on one topic from Culture and Identity; Families and Households; Health; Work, Poverty and Welfare (40 marks). Students answer extended writing question on one topic from Beliefs in Society; Global Development; The Media; Stratification and Differentiation (40 marks).
Paper 3: Crime and Deviance with Theory and Methods, 33.3% of A Level (2 hours)
Crime and Deviance short answer and extended writing (50 marks). Theory and Methods extended writing question (30 marks)
Available to all students in pathway 3 or 4.
This course will give students an excellent foundation for any social science degree and is a good choice & useful for those who want to work in teaching, law, journalism, social care, marketing, PR, advertising and nursing.
