Barbering VRQ Diploma Level 2 at City College Brighton and Hove

Course description

A VRQ Level 2 in Barbering is an industry recognised qualification. 
The City College Hair department benefits from having its own, professional salon that is open to the public and staffed by students. You will gain valuable experience of working professionally, which will stand you in excellent stead when you apply for jobs.
At the end of this qualification you will have gained skills, knowledge and experience in shampoo and hair conditioning, health and safety, cut hair using basic barbering techniques, cut facial hair to shape, change mens hair colour.
Successful completion of the course will allow you to progress onto the VRQ Level 3 Diploma or into industry. The Level 2 VRQ Diploma in Barbering is a job ready qualification based on National Occupational Standards for Barbering and will develop skills through working as a Barber in the workplace or work environment, enabling you to apply to Barbering positions in professional salons.

Course content

On the VRQ Level 2 Barbering you will learn to:

  • Health and safety
  • Shampoo and condition hair
  • Change mens hair colour colouring
  • Cut hair using basic barbering techniques
  • Cut facial hair to shape using basic techniques
  • Dry and finish mens hair
  • Develop effective working relationships
  • Promote products and or services to clients

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at grade E and above, to include English and Maths.

Interview for entry: Interview required

Pre-entry preparation:
S/NVQ Level 2 Hairdressing with Barbering Units – 4th edition by Leah Palmer and Nicci Perkins.

Financial information

All full time courses are free to EU residents who are under 19 years old on the 31st August 2016. The only fees you have to pay are for specialist resources and equipment and the cost of these varies from £25 to £300 depending upon the subject you are studying.

Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible for financial help from the college's learner support funds. You should apply for financial support as soon as you receive your offer letter.

Future opportunities

You can progress onto the Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Barbering course. If you wish to apply for jobs, then you can confidently look to operator roles within the industry, such as junior stylist within a salon, with further progression to senior stylist, Manager and Salon Owner.
